Do us a favor. Check into your bills or your income tax return report. What dates were stamped onto them? Were they the last date you were supposed to submit your income tax return report or to pay your bills? Have you ever had to buy tickets from scalper because you dawdled buying them? Well, if your answers are yes, maybe you are procrastinator.
Procrastinate literally means postpone doing what one should be doing. Some experts say that procrastination is a sabotage to ourselves. Procrastinators put obstacles in their own path. It is a sure-fire way to avoid success.
Procrastinators often told themselves “I’ll feel more like doing this tomorrow” ar “I’ll work best under pressure. In fact, they don’t have the urge to do the work the next day nor they work better under pressure.
Procrastination is self regulating problem. They fear of failure and success as well. They do nothing because they want to absolve the responsibility of the outcome of events. They hope that problems will just go away. As a result, they seek for divertion. Something that doesn’t take a lot of commitment.
According to Joseph Ferrari Phd., an associate professor of psychology at De Paul University in Chicago, there are three basic types of procrastinators :
- arousal types, or thrill-seekers, who wait to the last minute for the euphoric rush.
- avoiders, who may be avoiding fear of failure or even fear of success, but in either case are very concerned with what others think of them; they would rather have others think they lack effort than ability.
- decisional procrastinators, who cannot make a decision. Not making a decision absolves procrastinators of responsibility for the outcome of events.
Procrastinaton doesn’t come without costs. One of them is health. Procrastinating students had such evidence of compromised immune system as more cold and flu and more gastrointestinal problems.
So, what type of procrastinator are you? Me, ahh welcome to the club!
